This is a website run by the Church of the Latter Day Saints. It has genealogical information for surnames world wide.

Geneanet is an international genealogy database. Today the GeneaNet database holds over 135 million entries which is equivalent to over 400 million individuals.

One can also publish an online family tree very easily, by sending a gedcom file to the site.

If you would like to know a couple of places to post queries, here are a couple that I have found extremely helpful that have a global audience.

Both of these sites have individual boards for last names, countries, counties, provinces, states (what ever the case may be) as well as boards on wars, cemeteries...just about anything you might want to post a query about.

Another nice thing about Rootsweb is their mailing lists. You can join a particular mailing list that focuses on a specific locality or surname and get posts regarding that particular name or place and you can unsubscribe at anytime. Also, if you don't want to subscribe, their are links to search their searchable archives. Some of the mailing lists go back to 1997 and have lots of posts to look at. Here is the link.
