Question:

Where does the last name Romero comes from?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Hi there!

A few things... First of all. It appears that the origin of the surname "Romero" is from the medieval custom of pilgrimage to Rome.
Those pilgrims, upon return to Spain, were known as "romeros" and the same applies to those returning to their homelands in Portugal and other Mediterranean countries.

Thus, the last name has not one common origin but many, and the first mention dates from the late XIII century.

Romero also means Rosemary, the cooking herb.

That being said there are a few free websites you can check out for family history on the Romeros.

Here is the link to the Social Security Death Index. This is only good for Romero's in the United States. If your relatives weren't in the US then disregard this link. This index will list a persons birthdate, death date, Social Security Number, issuing state, and sometimes place of last benefit. This index is only helpful in locating US names back to the early 60's. Keep in mind that just because someone has a SS number, doesn't mean that they will appear in this index, but many will.

Genforum is a website where people post their queries about their families in hopes of finding a connection. The Romero board has 894 entries on it.

This is Rootswebs Romero board. It works much the same way as GenForum. One thing that is cool about both boards that I didn't mention is that when someone posts a response, you will get an E-mail letting you know that someone has responded.

This is the mailing list at Rootsweb for Romero. It is different from the message boards in that you subscribe to the list. The "list" is like a huge study group of the surname Romero. You will notice after you click the link that there is a searchable archive of all mailing list entries. I have found that some of the mailing lists are very active while others don't have much traffic at all.

This is the link to the World Connect trees at Rootsweb. If you simply type in Romero, you will see that there are 22,754 different Romeros in the trees at Rootsweb. You may or may not be related to these Romeros. You can narrow the search through many different search terms. It is up to you as to how you want to narrow your search.

Finally, this sight is the website to the Church of Latter Day Saints. You can search for ancestors on this site too. It works much the same way as the others.

The sites I listed are all free and hopefully can/will be instrumental to you as you start searching for your family. I hope that you will find these useful. Blessings to you.
