Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I find over 100 entries of the name in rootsweb.com's family files, nearly all of those that have a birthplace, show North Carolina. On the other hand, I looked in the LDS 1880 census, and don't find any in NC, but some connected to Ohio.
The problem with rare names, is that it might have become different through the years, for various reasons. Few might guess that Dolphay was originally Dauphinais (French Canadian). The only way to find this out for sure, is to do some solid research, starting with yourself, and working back one generation at a time, making sure you have well documented records to back you up.
Some might find the idea tedious... while many of us find it fascinating and addictive.
