Checking just for the surname alone and born in Germany, there are almost 900 entries. For Melchior, there are 3 entries (2 are the same date). But these are submitted by 3 different persons. Using these files can be good (if the persons indicate having good sources), and sometimes they just copy other's work, with no effort to verify. Normally there is an email address to contact the file owner, and there are sometimes researchers who have done enormous amounts of work, who don't even use the internet. One other thing that may help, is to go (again) to rootsweb, click on mail lists, and look for groups that focus on specific locations. They might not know your direct family, but can have great places to check for info. |
