Question:

Where does the last names San Nicolas, Cabrera, Mesa, and Lizama originate from?

I am a native Pacific Islander whose family have these lastnames. I really want to learn more about my families lastnames. Also I live on Guam.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Jason... too cool. One thing being here, is dipping my toe into research areas that are new to me. When I was in school, I wasn't fond of history at all, but wow, it really matters in overall understanding of ancestry.
So I took a quick look at Guam history, finding that there was Spanish colonization starting in the 1600's. You probably knew this. <grin> It gives an idea how Spanish type names are likely to be your background. And Chamorros were Native to Guam. I took a quick look at www.rootsweb.com in their family files, since they are world wide. I did find some person(s) who are working the Lizama family. For Cabrera, I see entries in different parts of the world.. none yet for Guam. I'll send you to look there, since this can connect you to others who already might have your lineage in their files.
I can talk all day about US resources, but what records are in Guam? I looked at www.cyndislist.com, and she has a number of things about genealogy in Guam, including mail lists.
Then there are "basic" research tools and techniques, that are common to everyone. Start with you, identify parents, grandparents, so forth as far as you can. Now, learn how to "prove" your info with documented sources, and how those sources will pull you into the records that take it further. When I started research, it stunned me how many places there are, which will tell me what no one living knew.
One important opinion from me, is to not get locked into names, but look at the individuals who are actually your ancestry. All will be unique. Places are only important, in terms of knowing where to look for a given record.
I feel like your personal history would be fascinating, for the different cultures you have. Would REALLY love to hear of your progress.
