Kelly56d!.!.!.is assuming you are dancing ballroom salsa!. I don't know what type of salsa you are learning!. Ballroom salsa is much stiffer than other types of salsa and NY and LA style salsa are not as stiff a sballroom but still stiffer than Cuban salsa!.

In Cuban salsa the arms much be very relaxed for the man to be able to lead the moves because they are very twisty and tangly and if the woman has arm tension it turns into an arm wrestiling match and you can even get hurt!.

Here is a couple of video example that demonstrate why dancing Cuban salsa requires relaxed arms!. Note also that in Cuban salsa they rotate all the time as if dancing around a circle or where the man is the axis and the woman moves around him!. Without this circular motion the moves won't work!. US-salsa styles are danced back and forth in a straight line rather than in a circle!.

Of course just telling someone to "relax" doesn't necessarily help and people might get so stressed from trying to relax that they actually get stiffer!. I think that it is a question of trusting your partners!. You have to just stop trying to control what happens, and trust that the guy knows what he's doing!. A lot of women nowadays are used to men who can't dance and so they are used to taking control and determining where and how turns will be done (backleading)!. You can't do that in salsa!. Just give it some time!. And ask your teacher for tips!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It takes some work!. Relaxation is a positive action, not just a lack of tone!. Just like everything else, it's a skill you'll have to work on!. Learning to follow will come!. You probably will spend some months dancing the beginner patterns you're being taught, and the devil take the guy who leads something else!. It's just part of the learning process, so lighten up and let it happen!.
By the way, the guy saying ballroom is stiff apparently isn't much of a ballroom dancer!. It may look that way, but appearances are not reality!. A good ballroom hold is also very relaxed; it just isn't sloppy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you should change you avatar picture, you are confusing, it looks like a guy but you are a lady!? tension, and pressure is necessary in ballroom dance frame!. you can't have arms like a wet spagetti noodle!. you must use resistance and proper form!. just let your coach make the corrections!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
