Question: Is light weight lifting good ballet prep!?
I'm starting a ballet class at the beginning of February, and I want to strengthen (among other things) my ridiculously weak arms!. I've taken ballet classes before, but this time I'm returning after a long break!.

So I've started lifting little 5 lb weights!. Will this develop the right muscles for ballet!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

You have to be careful!. Yes, ballet dancers are very strong, but it's a different kind of strong!. You have to build lean muscle, not big muscle!. Instead of lifting, try yoga and pilates!. Learn to hold your arms out to your sides for long periods of time!. Do just the arms for ballet warmups!. And, on a limited basis, you can do some pushups!. All of these things will help build lean muscle!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

NO please dont started lifting weights for ballet i dont think that would look good if you had giant muscles and was up there doing ballet you arms is not what matter in ballet its your legs and ankles that need to be strong and they will get strong after a couple of months when you are taking ballet!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You do lift weights!! Just the right amount and right muscle group! So that it does not become bulky and tight but rather long muscle and you can maintain flexiblility, but trust me 5 lb weights will not do much of anything!. Granted Yoga and Pilates is good for you also!. That doesn't mean weightlifting is bad, you just have to know how to do it for a dancer's body!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As a guy doing ballet, I have to do weight training to help with lifting and in general to build my body up!. Pilates is good for men & women and builds core strength which is important for any kind of dance!. That would be your best prep!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
