Question: Vaganova syllabus!.!.!.arch in my back!.!.!.!.ballet question, help me if you can!?
Hi, i am just getting back into ballet and my new school uses the vaganova (russian style) syllabus!.!.

My question is, I am being corrected for the arch in my back, which has never happened before!.
I basically need to redo my entire technique based on this fact!.
My teach wants my spine to be perfectly straight, "as a board"
or as if Im standing against a wall!.
Anyways, what are your thoughts on this!?
Should I just listen, or do what feels more natural!?
also, where in the vaganove syllabus does it say this!?
your thoughts are appreciated!.

thanks!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Pick up this book, the subject of posture is handled in the first few pages!.

http://www!.amazon!.com/Principles-Classic!.!.!.

The curve in your back is doing two things to your dancing that is detrimental to the progression of your training:

1) It takes the weight off of the center of your foot and places it squarely on the heels!. Having your center of gravity on your heels will hinder you in your turns and jumps, when you need to control it or move it forward!.

2) It keeps you from properly engaging your abdominal muscles and your backside therefore attributing to improper placement!.

Hope that helps!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your teacher may be trying to fix what we call a "sway" in your back!. As always you need to be pulling up through your abdominal muscles, keep your ribcage closed in (not "splayed"), your tailbone should be lengthened and reaching for the floor (not "tucked"), and your spine should be lengthened up out through the top of your head!. Keep working on all these things and it should help!. Keep in mind that everyone's body is different and it may be that you have a bit more of a natural curve in your spine than other people but you can definitely improve your stance with some work!. **It is not a correction that is specific to any one method of ballet but it is universally taught as the correct posture for ballet!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!. In the vaganova method you can't arch your back :)
Im taking ballet and my teacher used to be russian!. And we dance with the vaganova syllabus!.
Your tail bone should not be seen and your tummy and at the same time your butt should be like really flat!. seriously!.
It may be hard but it will really make you stronger!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I was in your position and it takes so time to get used to, what you do is like suck your butt under and in which should make your back straight!. And also try to suck your stomach in at the same tim!.!.!. :) hope this helps :DWww@QuestionHome@Com

Listen to what your teacher says as she will be expert at this technique also a straight back will look better!. Try not to do what feels natural as good technique is hard to perfect and sometimes can hurt until you are strong enough
