First of all, dancing in socks is both dangerous and provides a false aspect to your turns - the socks make it easier to pivot, particularly on wood, which means that while your balance gets a workout, your leg muscles and core do not learn what strength it takes to turn with the friction of the floor!. That is why you see so many people dance barefoot!. You never see performers wear socks!. Don't get me wrong - lots of dance instructors encourage their students to wear socks, particularly starting out, because it makes it easier to teach harder skills that they otherwise wouldn't be able to learn right away, and if your teacher asked you to you should continue to wear them!. However, most expert dance instructors discourage wearing socks in lieu of bare feet or proper shoes, because of the false sense of power and because you might slip and hurt yourself!. So, if you have the option, you're better off training without them!.

That said, the best way to learn to turn without socks is simply to practice!. Like anything else in dance, the skills will take repetition to get them down!. also, you will have trouble at first with your feet sticking to the wood if you aren't used to it, or if the floor is refinished!. This, however, will fade with time as your feet adjust to the exercise and you learn to counterbalance the friction!. You will be a better dancer for it, as you can't wear socks in performance and your muscles will be better developed!. Start with simple turns - chaines, piques, etc!. Build up to pirouettes!. also, even though you said you are a contemporary/jazz dancer, I'd recommend at least a few classes in ballet - there's no genre of dance that isn't based in, helped, and complemented by ballet technique!. There's just no substitute for a solid foundation!.

Good luck in dance!Www@QuestionHome@Com

In class, we have to practice dancing barefoot right at the beginning of the year so we will be able to dance comfortably barefoot in time for competitions and shows!. If you practice barefoot, you feet eventually get callused, and that makes it easier to turn because the hard skin glides easier on the floor!. Once your feet get more durable, you will be able to dance barefoot even easier than with socks!. When you dance barefoot, you get a better grip of the floor, so you can control your dancing better!. All you have to do is get used to dancing barefoot and you will eventually get used to it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I prefer to dance barefoot, after a while you will develop a calis like thing on the bottom of your foot!. In the mean time u can try and put some white flower on the soles of your feet, or use foot thongs (they are a shoe like thing that slips over just the ball of ur foot!. At first dancing bare foot will hurt a bit, but in no time u'll love it!Www@QuestionHome@Com

there are these "things" I don't know what you call them!. They have a slick rubber pad(sorta like the bottom of a ballet slipper!. ) They have straps so you strap it on the bottom of your foot!. Most barefoot dancers wear this to help them turn!. Look in a dance catalogue - I found one
