Question: Contemporary Dance!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!?
i have started contemporary dance and i am soooo unflexible that it hurt the next day!.!.!. just cramps!.!.!. thats it!.!.!. anyways to get my legs more flexible i was thinking about trying the splits!.!.!. i have been pushing my legs to stretch more than they have ever done and it seems to be working!.!.!. i was wondering whether what i plan to do will cause serious harm!.!.!. I cant do the splits and i find that if i can do them than i will be more flexible and i thought that if i go to where i can get!.!.!.[nowhere near the floor] and have somebody push my shoulders down so that my muscles strech!.!. would that cause reeal damage!.!.!. i thought that it would only stretch them!!! but i dont fancy bones or muscles to snap lol

haha :D i am improving because i never could do a crab before and now i can get my head an inch off the floor!!!

Don't even worry about the splits! It's a good stretch to practice because it makes your muscles warm and warms your legs up before dance, but I've been dancing for 8 years and still can barely do them! It's not a stretch that is mandatory, but practicing a little every day can help! And DON'T get someone to push you down!.!.!.you'll be in pain for while and can damage your muscles and tendons! i have been dancing almost all of my life and i still cant do the splits!. all of my dance teachers continue to tell us that if we practice a little bit every night they will get better!. don't push them too hard or you might pull a muscle!. probably not though!. if you want to get better do them once a night and eventually they will get better!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

don't worry to much about the splits i have danced a lot of my short life so far and still cant do the splits i do ballet twice a week as well as jazz/contemporary once a week Www@QuestionHome@Com

Being able to do the Splits you must be able to turnout from the hips!. To help turn out your hips sit on the floor with your back straight bring your feet together like frogs legs ( soles of your feet touch each other)!. To start with just sit in this position, then gentle bounce your knees and hips!. In time you will find that your knees get closer to the floor, this then gives you better turnout from the hips!. also lying on the floor legs out straight, pull one knee to your chest, each time trying to get it closer to your chest, then the other leg!. When you feel ready slowly release your knee from your chest straight up and pull the leg back towards your shoulder!. I still do these exercises and at nearly 40yrs old I can still do the splits, even did them still when I was 7mths pregnant, just take it slow and listen to your body, when the muscles start to burn its time to rest!.
