Question: Can I be forced to work/take classes!?
I work at a daycare/preschool and our director recently decided that we have to take classes on child development one evening a week (about 3 and 1/2 hours) and occasionally on saturdays!. I understand that we need to take the standard, first aid/ health classes, but these aren't required by the state and we don't get paid for the time!. We were told that the classes are now a job requirement, but I don't understand how these classes weren't a requirement when we were all hired!. Is this legal!? Can we be forced to take our time, gas money (the classes are offered at a center about 25 minutes from our workplace), and car wear and tear without financial compensation!? Where can I report this if it is illegal!?
Oh, and if we don't show up at any of the classes we will be charged $20 and our paychecks held until we pay!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First of all, why is this in the "dancing" section!?

This is a labor issue!. Call the Department of Labor and be brief with the person answering the phone (can a worker be required to take classes off the clock and unpaid if this was not part of the employment agreement) and be prepared to be transferred a few times!. They may refer you to a website!. I would also ask about the plan to hold your checks until you pay a fine for not attending!. This all sounds suspicious!.

It would help to find out the source of the requirement!. Is this a new company policy!.!.!.if so, politely ask the director if could you see the document or policy book where the requirement is printed!? also in most cities day care workers are not paid very much; the financial burden does seem unreasonable!.
