Quite an amazing amount of dance has Celtic roots and much can be traced back to Irish and Welsh dance styles and also Scottish dance!.

This type of Irish dance is well known all over the world!.

Here's Welsh dancing as performed in Kansas City - it's a less formal type of dance than Irish dancing and not nearly so energetic!.

Scottish dance - similarities between this and Irish dance, quite formal and competitive!.

Here in London, we have a lot of street dance styles!.

The above and last style probably comes from the 18thC but is not a sailor's dance because it requires too much space!. The Hornpipe dance can be performed in a small space either below or up on deck!.

You'll note that in the hornpipe, each dancer stays in one place - thus it is an authentic ship-board dance requiring only a small space!. It seems to date from either the 17th or 18thC and was devised originally as a means of keeping sailors fit!.
