you probably wont have to stop and if you do it won't be for long!. the best thing you can do for scoliosis is exercise!. there is nothing better than dance!.!. i have scoliosis as well!. mine wasn't caught until i was in my late 20's!. you are still young that chiorpractor can fix you!. when he gets thru you will be good as new!. the only reason the chiropractor couldn't fix me was i was to ld!. my bones had already set!. dance all you want!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

as long as it's not surgery you probably wont have to stop at all, i used to do dance, but i cant any more because my hip was damaged in an accident when i was atving!.!.!. but to the point you're very lucky they caught it early, and they'll be able to fix it fully!.!.!. the one thing you might want to do is take it easy acroWww@QuestionHome@Com

I was diagnosed with scoliosis in the 5th grade!. In fact 4 of my siblings also have it!. My sisters back was one of the worse the doctors in Louisville have ever seen!. She went through 8 back operations and three different kind of back braces growing up!. We went to Kosairs children's hospital in Louisville, & our doctor told us to continue exercising!. Lack of movement could cause our back to get worse and our scolosis more noticable!. They recommended floor training, & certain stretching exercises for us!. I would talk to my dance teachers, doctor, or perhaps a physical therapist to see which exercises work best for you!. If everyone works together you'll have less injuriesWww@QuestionHome@Com

just take it easy and when it hurts a lot stop for a while but if not just enjoy dancing and acro!!! good luckk!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Maybe for a few weeks!.!. But why would that matter!.!. A few weeks, or even months is nothing when it is for your long term health!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No my friend had Scoliosis at a 53 degree angle and the only thing she cant do now is sky diveWww@QuestionHome@Com

omg!!! i am glad i know someone like me!!!!

i have scoliosis and used to be a keen dancer!. im 13 years old aswell!!! well, 14 in a couple of weeks!.
About 6 months ago i was diagnosed with scoliosis, flat back syndrome, a herniated disc and degenerative disc disiese!. About a month before being diagnosed i had to give up dancing (i used to do ballet, modern, and rhythmic gymnastics that mounted up to 13 hours of gymnastics 3 of modern and 3 of ballet so i used to do a total of 19 hours of training a week) For me i had to much pain to keep on doing dance (i had a 18!.9 degree curve btw) but the other stuff ive got causes me to much pain to carry on dancing!.
The docs are looking in to possibilities of operating on me but ill never be able to go back to dancing!! :( :( im so sad!.!.!.!.

But my doctor reccomended i DIDNT go to a chiropractor, cause you will spend money for nothing, a chiropractor can never put the bones back in to place in scoliosis, it is IMPOSSIBLE, it might relieve the pain a bit, but it will never cure it, the only effective way is operating or a back brace!.!.!.

I would reccomend NOT giving up dancing and live youre dream, as i would of liked to!.!.!.i would only reccomend giving up dancing if it causes you to much pain or the doctor thinks it is ABSOLUTELY NECCACERRY!!!!! but dont go on the chiropractors word, ask youre doctor aswell!!!

i hope you never give up dancing!!!! LIVE YOURE DREAM!!

bye!!!

Tell me if this makes sense: You have a problem called scoliosis!.!.!. your options are A) Sit and watch you until you get worse
B) stick you in something that restricts every motion through the middle of your body, setting you up for premature arthritis, and muscle weakening possibly leading to an advancing curve or
C) Cut you open, stick metal rods in your back so you can't move, and guarantee you arthritis at the levels above and below those metal rods!.
That's your "Best treatment!?!!?" Give me a break!. Would you rather sit and do nothing, or actually do something about fixing the problem!?

There are cases upon published cases of chiropractors stopping progressive curves, slowing and even normalizing scoliotic curves!. Granted when curves get too severe and begin to impair breathing and heart function surgery is sometimes required, but not nearly as often as it is performed, mainly because the outcome statistics are so admittedly poor!. The cutting edge for scoliosis treatments is currently through a group called the Clear institute based in Minnesota!. (www!.clear-institute!.com) Two other good scoliosis methods through chiropractic are through the pettibon system and through something called chiropractic biophysics (CBP) Any active management is better than waiting and hoping it doesn't get worse!. It may take a number of visits, but stick with it, and make sure you chiropractor is actually helping you, make sure you are getting some type of exercise from the chiropractor, because without it your treatment isn't as effective!.

As far as dance recommendations, those are between you your chiropractor and your doctor, but motion and activity are key, lack of motion and lack of activity will only make it more likely your symptoms will get worse!. Best of luck

Side note- I hate to pick on the 13 year old girl who posted but!.!.!. A back brace will not cure scoliosis and it is unlikely that even with scoliosis, a disc herniation and diagnosis of degenerative disc disease would come forward in a 13 year old, in fact that is probably something so unusual a doctor might want to write about it and publish it in a professional journal, especially in a case with only a 19 degree curve!. Note I say not impossible, just extremely unlikelyWww@QuestionHome@Com

You need to see a spine specialist, either neurosurgeon or an orthopedic surgeon!. I don't trust chiropractors!. I had my back manipulated once or twice, it always hurt worse after they were done with it!. As a nurse, I've also cared for a few patients who required surgery after seeing a chiropractor because the chiropractor actually caused nerve damage!.

Treatment of scoliosis is based on the severity of the curve and the chances of the curve getting worse!. Certain types of scoliosis have a greater chance of getting worse, so the type of scoliosis also helps to determine the proper treatment!. There are three main categories of treatment: observation, bracing, and surgery!.

If the curve is small when first diagnosed, it can be observed with routine x-rays and measurements!. If the curve stays below 25 degrees, no other treatment is needed!. If the curve is between 25-40 degrees, a brace may be recommended!. If the curve is greater than 40 degrees, then surgery may be recommended, otherwise the patient will eventually be at risk for heart or lung problems!.

Try to get in with Shriner's Hospital/Clinic!. In my opinion as a former patient and now a health care professional, it's absolutely the best place for scoliosis patients under 21! Other places may do this too, but I think Shriner's goes above and beyond for their kids!.

As far as exercise, my docs have told me to do whatever I want and listen to my body when it says I am pushing my limits!. I did recreational belly dance for several years and still do yoga!. With both, the fusion prevents some positions/moves, but both are doable in a modified fashion!. They also help maintain or improve what flexibility you do have!.

I've also been an OR nurse for 16 years, one of the most physically demanding areas of nursing (lots of lifting and lots of standing in one place for long periods)!. I've had 2 children without difficulty (didn't even use an epidural)!. I love to travel (I don't set off metal detectors), and SCUBA dive!. I can pretty much do anything I want!.!.!.but don't tell my husband I use the scoliosis to get out of vacuuming :)Www@QuestionHome@Com
