Question: How come dance teachers don't have to be qualified !?
In Australia, (I'm not sure about other countries), there doesn't seem to be any legal requirement for dance teachers in private dance schools to be qualified in either dance or teaching!.
Is this right!?
Should non- qualified dance teachers be allowed to teach!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

In a free enterprise economy, anybody can open any kind of business they want!. Unfortunate, but true!. In many other countries - Russia, for example, this is not the case!. If you want to become a ballet dancer in Russia, you have to go through a certified Vaganova school, and you are not allowed to teach unless you are the best of the best - and you teach in a state-sponsored school; you can't open your own studio!.

In fact, several methodologies do offer certification programs, including RAD and Cecchetti!. These are major pluses!.

It would be really good if governments required a teacher to be certified in some methodology, but I have a feeling that people would find a way around that!. You know, like I could just invent the Zoe Method, certify myself, and teach with that!. I don't know!. In a competitive economy, it's difficult to put restraints on what kind of business a person can or cannot open, since it's self-employment and not like a school teacher being hired by a district!.

Plus, I don't know about Australia, but in the US the government doesn't care nearly enough about the arts, so it is hardly likely to make laws to improve their instruction!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on what you mean by "non-qualified" i guess!.
There shouldn't be a legal requirement for dance teachers no, but the teachers should be very skilled it what they are doing, yes!.

While it is imperative that ballet teachers have sufficient training and company education, it is unnecessary, and sometimes ridiculous for hip hop teachers to have formal dance education in terms of dance degrees!.

Many dance styles have been movements that have happened within the last few years, taking someone who was trained at a college or conservatory may not be familiar with the kind of dance the students are interested in learning!.

dance teaching comes down to the ability to teach dance well, and make you into a better dancer!. if your teacher can do that, then they are more than qualified!. don't be so worried about degrees and extensive credentials, you have to find a dance teacher that works with YOU, often that won't be the "most qualified" of the bunch!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm a ballroom and latin american instructor here in South Africa!.

First off, there are numerous bodies and dance sillabi throughout the world!. You get a social syllabus, an international syllbus, a fred astaire syllabus, the american syllabus, the walter laird syllabus etc etc etc etc!.

You can compare dancing to graphic design - a designer never stops learning!. There's always soemthing new, and dance techniques and sillabi change throughout the years!.

Studios aren't looking for trainers who have millions of certificates behind their name, they are looking for someone with experience!. Someone who can work with people, train correctly, and still be able to hold themselves on the dancefloor, and stand out above any student within that school!.

We have been looking for dance intructors at our studio for the last 6 months again, and we have only had 4 applications!. Reason being, you don't get people, qualified or not, who know hte amount of steps required for a teacher to know!. When starting as an instructor you need to know everything, male and female, technique, frame everything up to the end of silver!. If you watch competitions, this is the level they call novice!.

This is thus why when a studio finds someone good, with enough knowledge and people skills, they hire them, immediately!.

Knowledge is power!

I am not qualified, but in the process of doing my associated exam for the South African Dance Foundation!. BUT the perk is, my studio is gaining the nine years of dancing, and 5 years of teaching experience!. Valuable indeed!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
