I know you said,"non-westerners",Hon, but I couldn't resist commenting!. Being a former dancer and having had extensive ballet raining,I would have to say(with extreme prejudice, mind) that the ballet is one of the most poetic, beautiful, and enduring forms of western dance expression!. I dare anyone to sit through a performance of,"La Sylphide",or"Giselle" and not be moved, even if you don't understand the plot!. In this, ballet is very like opera!. Either you love it or you don't!. There's very little in between and I have to say that many inner-city kids who've been introduced to ballet came away impressed enough to want to study!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would think that Russia thinks fairly highly of it, having perfected the art (in the eyes of many, anyway) and their schools have turned out some of the most renowned dancers - Nureyev, Baryshnikov, Makarova - as well as some of the most beloved ballets - in the world!. There are ballet schools everywhere from Beijing to St!. Petersburg!. It's not just the West!. So apparently it appeals to at least some Easterners!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I loved ballet as a child and still love it today!. It is a gorgeous art that many people take for granted!. Few people take a weekend to go to a ballet!. But ballets are wonderful stories told in dancing!! If you could only understand the work put into those shows you would think it is an art!! But it is also a sport!. The time put into it is unbelievable and should be recognized as something amazing!. The pain from point shoes is almost unbearable, but if you can grin and bear it, your routine will be beautiful!. Thank you and please go to a ballet this weekend!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
