Question: What should I expect to do during my first ballet lesson!?
I'm a 16 yr old guy and got talked into giving ballet a try by one of my drama teachers!. My first class is on Friday evening and I am wondering what it will be like!. I know it is scheduled for about an hour and fifteen minutes!. What exactly do you do for an 1!.25 hrs when you first start out!? Does everyone in the class do the same thing no matter how long they've been going!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I've danced for 12 years and recently had to quit because of an injury!. I miss it so much! I hope this helps!.!.!.

First, you'll do warm up exercises at the barre!. The teacher will show you the combination and usually allows questions to be asked!. Then, you'll do the combination with your left hand on the barre, then turn around (always towards the barre) and do it with your right hand on the barre!. The order of the combinations will probably be something like this: plies, tendus, degages, ron de jambes, frappes, adagio, stretch, and grand battements!.

Then, you'll come to the center of the floor and do some similar combinations as the ones at the barre, but it will be harder since you won't have anything to hold on to!. Your muscles should be warm and you will probably be sweaty by this point!. You'll also probably do a turn combination or two!. You will probably do a waltz from one side of the room to the other as well!. (This is called going "across the floor")!.

Then, you'll start the jumping (allegro) portion of the class!. You'll do small jumps in the center of the room and then proceed to bigger and bigger jumps!. At least one combination will be a jump combination across the floor!. Then you'll do a quick reverance where the teacher leads the class and the class copies at the same time!. It's a time to bring your heart rate down, stretch, and bow to thank your teacher!. Then you'll be done! Be sure to thank the teacher for class!. They always love that!.

- Don't worry about catching all of the French terms (like the ones above) at first!. Let that come as you get more used to the movements!. Just focus on copying the teacher!.
- You've probably been put in a beginner class for older students!. Everyone will be given the same combination and expected to at least try it!. The teacher may show a variation to make things harder or easier, which will be your choice!.
- Try to have fun!. Ballet class can be very frustrating for a beginner, especially if it seems that everyone else gets it!. You're starting really late into the year, so you probably will get confused and frustrated, but that's okay!.
- Make sure you can see the teacher from where you're standing!. Watch other students and try to copy it with your own body!. Just don't stare in an awkward way!. Girls are generally very self-conscious when they're wearing a leotard & tights!.
- Make sure to stretch afterwards!. This will make your muscles less sore the next day!.
- You may also want to take a pain reliever (ibuprofen or the like) before you go to ben!. This will work during the night to prevent stiff and sore muscles!.
- Drink LOTS of water before and after the class!. You'll probably be allowed to bring a bottle of water into the class also!. Do that!.
- Relax and realize you won't have it perfect!. No dancer ever has achieved the point of perfection!. Take corrections well and know that the teacher is trying to help you, not embarrass you or criticize you!.
- If you have a mean or bad teacher, remember there are tons of other teachers out there!
- Be respectful and don't talk!. Nothing is worse than a bad first impression!. The only time that teachers are okay with talking (sometimes) is during the free stretching time!.

I hope you love ballet!. We need more guy dancers out there! Have fun!Www@QuestionHome@Com
