Position:Home>Dancing> I want to become a dancer, but I'm not sure if I'm good enough...?

Question:I am going to take up dance soon, but I feel like I'm not very coordinated. My friend dances, and she's really good. I also don't really have a "dancer's body." I'm not overweight or anything, it's just I have a curvy/muscular body.

How do I achieve being a good dancer before I start?

I know a lot of great dancers that don't have typical "dancer's bodies". Don't let that discourage you. And you'll learn coordination in dance classes. Before you start classes, maybe just dance in front of a full-length mirror and develop an awareness of the way your body moves and looks. Also, do some serious stretching, every day. Really push yourself with stretches, not so much that you pull a muscle though! Good luck, you'll love dance.

How does one define a "good dancer"?

i bet you mom and dad are proud!

Work out a bit before you start taking classes...but if your friend has been dancing for a while before you then of course she will be better. But the best you can do is learn from her, and work hard in your dance classes to get to her level. Also a good idea would be to enroll in a dance team/class at your school. This could prove to be more fun and you get to meet many new people : ]

dance makes you curvy/muscular. :D

just practise a lot and i'm sure you would be good. A lot of it is about dedication.

take the classes and enjoy them! dancer's body is a stereotype!! if you enjoy and love dancing then you are a dancer. :)

its ok if you aren't the best dancer. the main key is to have fun. i just tryed out for the highest dance class at my school and i didn't make it. so i messed up a couple of times. but i had a fun time doing it. so I'm going to keep trying. just put your all into it and you can do it. and just keep practicing you will get it, i believe you can:] and don't worry about the "dancers body" i am way far from having it and i think i do fine. you are perfect in your own way.

When I started taking dance classes , I had no coordanation whatsoever but after a while , I started getting the hang of it and building up my confidence. My friend was also already a good dancer before I started and still is as she is in a different class than me . There are quite a few curvy people at my dance studio and most of them are in the highest class.
