Regarding the splits...

It's quite easy to do those even without a supervisor. I suggest testing how low you can go first. When I say "low", I meant really low. Don't stop the moment you feel the pain of the muscles stretching. Endure the pain and keep on going. Stop only when you feel like you *really* can't go any lower. This way, you can determine your starting point.

Considering that you're a dancer, chances are your starting point is already zero level aka. on the floor. I began the same way. Though, of course, only daily practice would enable you to reach the floor effortlessly.

When you do the practices, as soon as you stretch your legs, bounce on it. The momentum enables your muscles to stretch without feeling too muhc pain. In fact, if you do it in short, continuous bounces, you won't feel pain at all. You'll just notice that you're going lower and lower without hurting. Erm, I guess the only problem here is strain. But, you'll get over that one quick.

Now, how to improve your skills perse..

True, practice is beneficial. You'll never go anywhere unless you rehearse. Bear in mind, though, that it's not just mastery of steps. It's the spirit that carries the routine.

Memorization and mastery is the easiest part in learning how to execute a certain dance, because those merely depends on your mind's ability to quickly pick up instructions and your body's flexibility to do it. Seeing that you are able to nearly perfect your steps, this shouldn't be a problem, anymore.

Perfect execution, now this is the trickiest part. It's not just knowing how to do it. Practice until the steps become a habit, a natural reflex. My trainer once told me that he will never teach me new steps until I can perfectly dance the old ones, in my sleep. And that's just it. Your conscious mind knows the step, well and good. Now, teach your subconscious mind those. Train it until it, too, can perfectly dance.

I'm not sure if this little tidbit can help but part of my training includes my teacher playing random songs. I'm supposed to dance a certain routine that fits the rhythm of that song. Without learning the steps by heart, that would be a difficult job. Especially since you only have ten seconds to decide which routine to use.

Next tip.

Put your soul in it. A good dancer pleases the senses. A GREAT dancer pleases the heart.

the only thing you can do to do a split is strech everyday and just keep working at it. Practicing is all there is to do when trying to excel at dance.

creativity and coordination are what you need to focus on, the splits should be a distant....I wouldn't even say 3rd.

PRACTISE!!!!! Don't get bitten by the green eyed monster (jealousy!) there is a reason that girl won the trophy, and maybe she is looking for ways to improve so that she doesn't stumble! Don't get jealous, just beat her next term ( but be a good sport!)!

if you are talking ballet always look at yourhands and follow them and always smile try to get your splits aswell

Hmm.. don't be worried.. im sure you have much potential as her.. dancing is fun and great physical excercise... but for others it can be competitive..

you want the trohpy right..?
So don't worry about her, or criticise her...!!
You have to practise.. practise makes perfect right!! And it already sounds like your a veryy talented dancer!!

So u want the splits down!!
The splits is probably one of the things you need to have to excell at dancing...
Everyone can do the splits.. but you have to be devoted and willing to get in there and go go go..

firstly.. always warm up
One day i didn't warm up before doing the splits and did them.. i pulled my gluteus (butt).. and it was very painful.. don't take the chance soo dance like mad till your sure ur body is nice and warm to get stretching..

To get the splits down u cant stretch 1 day and the next day be like Ugh stuff it then stretch the day after.. it isn't going to work like that... if you want them down by atleast 3 weeks.. you have 2 set a goal.. make it your top priority..

This is a website i used.. this is 100% guarantted to work!!
I got my splits down by using this.. !!
Oh and also.. if you miss a day you kinda mess the whole routine so try and stay within the guidelines!!

Keep working towards them and you'll have them down in no time..!!
don't be discouraged by how far you are from the ground.. you won't find results within the first days but i bet you.. after 4 or more days you'll notice a huge difference than before!!

I hope this helped!!
Happy stretching.. lol : )

Don't compare yourself to the other girl. btw where do you dance? is it in Michigan?

To do the splilts; streatch and go into them as far as you can everyday. Last year, I made it my goal to be able to do them, and now I can. I hope that you get one next term!

Are you sure you are doing things perfectly? Just doing them without stumbling is not right...nor do you need to do a split to be a good dancer!
The key to being a good dancer is to learn the proper way to do things, practice doing that way, and only that way, and practice it a lot!
Everybody makes mistakes while dancing...but good technique makes those mistakes seem smaller, and bad technique makes a routine done without "mistakes" look bad.

practice practice practice!

Practice! My dance coach always says practice makes better, because we don't go for perfect. Just dance your heart out and give 200%. Ask questions and try to do everything better. Smiling always makes things better too!
