Each school is different. Some emphasize ballet, modern, dance cultures of the world, dance therapy, performance, dance history, improvisation, choreography , dance education, creative movement.
You must find a program that fits your abilities and your aptitude.
You must audition to be a dance major in most universities. In small liberal arts schools you can major in dance by doing the course work well, usually.
There is a tremendous amount of scholarship money for dancers who audition for the scholarships. You will need to research when the auditions are and what the requirements. Auditioning for 10 schools is not uncommon.
