Position:Home>Dancing> What is the dress code at your dance studio?

Question:I teach ballet and character at a small dance studio (around 50 students). The studio has been in business for close to 30 years and is well established as the place to go in our area for discipline and good training.

I recently realized that our code of conduct has not been updated since I was a student at the school (In the late 1980's!). Its not bad but feels outdated and our director is letting me re-write it.

Our current dress code is very vague and one of the things I really want to clean up.

For dancers and dance teachers . What is the dress code at your dance studio? Specifically for Ballet, Character, and Modern.

and besides clothing, do you have rules about hair, makeup, jewelry, etc?

Ballet: For boys: white or black tights and t shirt. Black danceshoes.
For girls:black leotard, pink tights and pink dance shoes.

For hair..you have to tie your hair in a bun or in a ponytail.
( NO clips either )
There is no jewlery allowed.
You can wear make-up.
For ballet : you have to wear pink-ish nylons with a balck skirt or short ( ballet shoes of course ! and you are allowed to wear any color leg warmers ) and then you have to wear you *suit* for ballet.

For hip-hop
and tap : Black joogers with any color top and if you bring a sweater it has to be black..

??

JAZZ - our dresss code is our "logo leotard" (it has our dancer logo on it), and any solid color bottom. tights are optional. Any jazz bootie

TAP- logo leotard and capris or shorts no jazz pants( so they can see our feet) Capeio U shaped mary jane

Lyrical- any leotard with shorts. capris and tights
suntan capezio bootie

Modern- leotard and capris of shorts

Ballet- we have different colored leotards for each level
pink for the first 3, blue for the next 2, purple, black for the advanced. Ballet pink tights and and split sole ballet shoe. Skirts are ok until after recital and then we have to take them off to prepare for evluations. we can wear tight black "booty" shorts all year if we choose
Our character is in our ballet class and we have these long black skirts that were hand made and we also use a sansha soft character shoe
Hair must be pulled back off the face and must be in a bun for ballet

No jewerly, gum! Also we dont allow you to go in your socks because it is really slipperly and and we had somebody fall hurt there hip because they were wearing socks and no shoes.

well, at wear I take, we all have to wear black, so that we all look like a team. we all also are required to have shoes. our hair has to be pulled back into a pony tail or bun and any hanging hair needs to be pulled back.

we are also not supposed to wear jewlery.

but the funny thing is that we no one enforces the rules at all!!

my dance studio is also small (probably around fifty dancers who compete) and not having everything so up-tight is actually really helpful to me!

it makes me feel like i can do what i need to do, but it gives it a sence of more of a kind environment. and that works for most people! but whatever you think will work for you!!!

i hope that this helped, and good luck!!!

Leotards and tights. For ballet tho you need your hair in a bun and no jewelry unless just recieved. For other classes you can layer shorts sweats anything you want. Still no jewelery. I'd say ours is "we need to see your body." Hair must be up only bun is required for ballet.

At my studio it is:

Ballet: Tights, Leotard, skirt optional, must have a bun ( but our ballet teacher is really nice and lets that slide usually) no sweatpants, shorts, shirts.

We don't really have a dress code for anything else except

You cant wear street clothes like jeans, or skirts or shorts that aren't made for sports.

Hip-Hop- You must have sneakers, or hip hop shoes, but no skater shoes, or shoes that you wear outside.

Hair- Nothing that distracts from the learning process. Our hair has to be up in a pony or bun except for lyrical and modern, because it actually helps and adds to the dance.

Jewelry- No long earings, they have to be studs, and no long beaded necklaces ( they tend to break and roll all over the room)

Also you have to have the proper shoes for your class.

Hope this helps you. =]

For Ballet;

We have to wear leotards, pink tights, hair in a bun, ballet shoes, no gum, no bangs or loose hair hanging in your face, shorts or a skirt(optional), and i think that is it... Hope I helped

At my dance studio, it is hair pulled back, so it is not in the way of our spotting, black leotard, pink, or tan tights, and shoes that go with each class. As for makeup, and jewelry, we don't have any rules about that i don't think. they do tell us not to wear jewelry, because people have lost their jewelry, but we are still aloud to wear it if we want. My old dance studio, did say that we had to have a Cammi leotard though.

For competition teams we have to wear all black [[so some people dont stand out]] and have to have our hair pulled back with the correct shoes for the class. WE also have to have something covering our knees [[pants, tights, etc.]]. and no dangley jewlery.
For noncompetition treams it is whatever you feel comfortable dancing in, ballet or whatever shoes you want and hair pulled back.

Well in our school we wear the following:

Ballet/Character:tights(any color),leotards(the swimsuit looking top,any color as well),*leg warmers,*jackets, shorts or skirts, ballet shoes or character shoes
Modern:black pants(or jazz pants) or jogging pants, any top, black kin of ballet shoes
Hair:always tied up(bun or ponytail)
No jewelry except wristwatches(especially bracelets)
Make up is allowed
*-optional :)

The dress code at my studio is pink tights, pink ballet slippers, certain leotard colors for certain levels, hair clean and in a tight bun, pinned back if too short, and no jewelry except for stud earings. The advanced girls pretty much wear whatever leotard colors they want because we take so many classes and get bored with just one color. We are allowed to wear legwarmers, tight shorts, and maybe tight tank tops if it's cold. My teacher isn't too strict about the dress code except for hair and jewelry. We have no specific rule for makeup, but if you came to class with tons of eyeshadow, mascara, and eyeliner on, my teacher would probably be miffed at you.

For modern, we wear whatever we want. Usually it's just a leotard and black tights, no shoes, but we wear tons of different things because so few of us take the modern classes that no one cares what we wear. We make sure it's appropriate for dance, of course.

For Character, I suppose just pink tights, black character shoes, and a black character skirt that's about knee-length or a little longer. I'm not sure what color leotard.

For pre ballet: pink leotard , pink tights, hair pulled away from face
ballet 1: not sure what color leotard, pink tights, hair in bun
ballet 2 : baby blue leotard, pink tights, hair in bun
ballet 3: lavender leotard, pink tights, hair in bun
ballet 4: burgendy leotard, pink tights, hair in bun,
ballet 5: black leotard, pink tights, hair in bun
ballet 6: not sure what color leotard, pink tights, hair in bun

no jewlery
