Position:Home>Dancing> I feel fat at ballet class?

Question:I am 24 and 5'6" and weigh 115 pounds, but I feel so fat compared to the other girls. The other girls are so SO slim next to me. They are of Chiese ethnicity and I am caucasian, and they are so petit and tiny next to me, even though I wear a dress size 6/8 in England. They always comment about how tall I am in a derogatory manner and talk about how massive my pointe shoes are (I take a shoe size 39 (or Canadian 7).
Can someone please help me dissolve this insecurity I have and help me get over this issue please?

That's really awful! You are the perfect size for a ballerina. Among "normal" people (not dancers LOL), you'd probably be considered too thin.

I think there are a couple of things going on here. First, almost everyone in ballet class thinks they're too fat. It just seems to be an epidemic among dancers, unfortunately. The other thing is that your classmates are racists, plain and simple. They're putting you down because you look different from them. What if the situation were reversed, and you were the only Asian girl in a class full of Caucasian dancers, and they all made fun of your size? That wouldn't be too cool, would it? It's not acceptable, either way.

What to do? Well, you're probably not going to be able to change them; they don't sound like very nice people anyway. So either you're going to have to find another place to dance, or you're going to have to get tough. Is there another studio where you can study where you won't be the only "different" one? That would seem like the easiest solution: tell the owner of your studio why you're leaving...and then leave.

If for some reason you must stay where you are, you're going to need to work very hard with yourself. As someone else here mentioned, I think you really *know* you're not fat. Just focus on your dancing and forget those other girls. Seriously, just ignore them. Pretend they're not there.

I've taken lots of ballet classes in New York with professional dancers, who were just in the class to warm up or nurse an injury or something. Believe me, those professionals do not pay any attention to the people around them. They focus on themselves and what they want to get out of the class. They don't look at anyone else, talk to anyone else, or worry about anyone else. They're in class for themselves, to work. Can you try to take that approach? You're not in class to compete with those little beasts: you're there for you. Ignore their comments, ignore them. Seriously, just start cutting them dead. Focus on what you want to get out of each class. Listen to the teacher's corrections. Watch yourself in the mirror. Work on becoming a better dancer. If you can take that attitude, you can dance in any kind of negative situation.

Good luck to you!

they are too thin you are not fat believe me

Maybe take up a field sport such as shot or discus?

confidence. Your a UK size 6/8, ok its a bit TOO slim but its fine for you. And lets face it, your unique. So, instead of worrying think to yourself i am happy the way i am and jus laugh.

you arent fat, they are just jealous. Just dont worry about your weight, the way ive always looked at it "dont worry, be happy!".
It doesnt matter what other people think, just enjoy life.

You already know that you are not overweight. Stop torturing yourself & accept that you are never going to be as petite as your chinese classmates. If they can't say anything nice then ignore them - they are not worth it!

The ideal weight for a woman 5'6" is 114 - 145 lbs so you are right at the bottom of the healthy range, especially considering as a ballet dancer you must have a lot of muscle.

If you need a boost just think how much more elegant & feminine your tall slender frame will look on stage than their childlike bodies.

Good heavens - you must be dancing amongst the Lilliputians to feel fat 115lbs!! Show up at dance class wearing the latest fashions and hottest shoes over your leotard...the ones that they would never be able to wear unless they had 3 feet of material tailored off it....then say things like "I can wear anything off the rack and never have to settle for the petite version".

They are all short and skinny, simple!

Because you stick out for being different they have to pick on something!

i am 5' 10" and 128 lbs, and i think I am gorgeous!! LOL!

I will not feel bad because I weigh 120 pounds, but I think I like good. You is not fat you thick from the other girl in the class. So don't be sad about your weigh.

If you compare yourself to others, you will always fall short. Don't worry about what they think or say. What matters is what you beleive. Can you dance? Are you able to keep up with the class? Think more on class related workouts and you'll feel better.

i do ballet at a very strict dance school!! and i am bigger than you and everyoone aroubd me is slimer !!! but i am one of the bst in the class it is not about how big you are t is how good you are and you are not fat at all there jus from a differnet culture than you so there bound to be different every one is different

i have the same insecurity and honestly i think everyone does.. those girls probably think that they are fat too. its those leotards and tights seriously! but just get confidence by whenever you feel insecure thinking "i am amazinggg" or something like that or think how good you are at ballet instead of focusing on how you look in the mirror. i hope i helped! :]

Female sprinters have to be a certain shape to do what they do, and the same is true of ballerinas.

I am male and my opinion is - NEITHER ARE ATTRACTIVE

If you are not wirey and scrawny like a baby-bird in a tutu, congratulations.

Perhaps stop doing ballet - it sounds like a *****-fest. Do salsa or something - you'll feel sexier and get laid too

Muscle Weighs more than fat.
I am A dancer And I don't go By Weigh because it doesn't tell me whether It is fat or muscle. (i don't even own a scale lol)
But i know I have ALOT of muscle. I am 5'3'' ad weigh around 100 (not quite sure cause i don't own scale and I only get my weight so i can put it on Doctor forms and such.) I think i am perfect and i think you are too!! And Really Chinese ppl are super Smaller that Caucasian girls! lol Well good luck finding yourself

hey...those little chienese are probably belimech!!! and you should make comments like OMG YOUR POINTE SHOES ARE SO SMALL!!! did u borrow them from barbie or somethin?
or like "so how tall are you anyways????" "do you shop in juniors department or childrens??"
and hey...i m friends with lots of chienese and philipino and korean so yeah..i feel huge around them too.
(i know...my little "..." are so lame...ya ya)lol

honey, don't worry bout it!!

You are taller and thinner than me! I weigh 134 and I am 5'4". I would love to be in your position. If you get to thin, you tend to get sloppy in dance, and look somewhat gross. Considering your height, dont even consider losing weight. you would look sloppy. They are most likely thinking you look better, and taller people look better than shorties. so just ignore them. Or if you wanted to, you could point out all of their imperfections.

At 5'6" and 115 you are IDEAL! There are thousands of young ballerinas that would kill to have your dimensions. As for your classmates - hmmmm, let's see, well I guess the best way to deal with nasty comments is to ignore them and work to develop better technique that anyone else in the class (just work hard and "show them how its done". If you ever perform on stage, the audience would much rather see a flesh and blood woman than a petite figure that resembles a little boy. BTW, do you need a dance partner?...Just kidding ;-) Good Luck

Embrace your size! Who cares about what they think? Ignore them, they're just vicious harpies.

I am Chinese and I take a dance class with other Chinese girls. We are all around average height, 5'4, but I am significantly more muscular than them, since I play waterpolo. And Chinese girls are supposed to be thin and delicate, right? That's what one of the girls told me the other day, but I ignored her and told her that she had no right to insinuate that I was "fat", and frankly, I was a much better dancer than her.

Your not fat at all!!
You sounds like the same type of build as me, Im 5ft 7, just over 116 pounds and a size 8.
I do ballet, and am probably one of the smallest in my ballet class.
Just be proud to be different from these girls, not everyone wants to have a dancer who is tiny.
Your probably just as good, if not better then them, so just keep your head up, and enjoy the dancing!

If they want to be bitches that's their lookout. Want me to come and stand next to you? I'm 5'7" and 12 and a half stone. Just concentrate on yourself. Keep in mind that bent over you will always have what appears to be rolls, IT'S SKIN. Bony is not a good look for ballet.

There's no point beating yourself up over something you can't change - you're taller than them, and of course you have bigger feet so you don't fall over. Maybe they're actually envious of your height and the fact that you won't be stuck looking like a child forever. I worry that you feel fat at half an inch shorter than me and less than 8 and half stone - isn't that close to underweight?

If it weren't for blimmin' Anna Pavlova, we'd all be allowed to be curvy...

Its fine you have a very healthy weight if you lost some you would probably be underweight. They are probably just jealous of you because you are either better at dancing than them or you are prettier than them who knows maybe even both. Also they may just be built differently like no hips or chest so you feel fat compared to them but you really aren't. I take lots of ballet and i have hips that whole hour glass shape going on and i sometimes feel like I'm fat but then i just remind myself that they are just built differently. Honestly people that take ballet and are really skinny and petite look kind of weird in leotards especially colored ones, because there ribs just pop out, and it looks gross.

I hope this helped you.

dont go any more then

go on a diet

If you feel that bad about it, loose a little weight, but I think your fine as you are.

nobody can help you but yourself, plus if it really bothers you workout, but people can only get so thin
