You would more likely pull the muscle. It can take months for a pulled muscle to heal. You could also strain a muscle which would mean avoid the side split for a week or until it doesn't hurt.
Run around or in place. Then do some simple stretches. Now do the side split if you feel warm. Don't force the splits.

Yes, it usually occurs when you push your body wayy over its limits.

Once it starts hurting pretty bad, STOP.

The most I've heard of a muscle being torn was probably like, for 2 weeks tops.

If it happened to you, then i would ice it and stop stretching in any way that has to do with where you tore it and just rest.
