I run a Hip Hop dance school in northern California called FUNKMODE. We do Private Lessons for all levels of dancers.

A good teacher will sit down with you first and let you thoroughly explain exactly what you want to get out of the lessons. Private Lessons should be completely tailored to your individual wants and needs. The teacher will probably ask what kind of music you most enjoy and what experience you have in dance. It's important for the teacher to know what music moves you because that is what you'll be dancing to most often. Knowing your experience is important because then the teacher knows how difficult to make the lessons. Your teacher will probably want to test you out on some moves to see what you can do before teaching you a routine or any basic steps. A good introduction should also include the teacher explaining to you his/her background and philosophy on dance and instruction. This will make sure you two are a good fit.

After you both get to know one another, you will probably start working on whatever you came there specifically to learn. If it's a routine you want, then you'll either start learning a dance you want to imitate or one the choreographer creates for you. Each week you'll learn a little bit more until you complete the routine and then you'll practice it til you've got it down. Hopefully you're working together long enough so that you can learn a few different routines that have different styles.

If you haven't thought of this already, you might also want to ask to work on some basic freestyling in addition to learning choreography. Learning routines is great, but you can't do routines at a party or club/dance. For those places, you need to be able to just break it down on the fly. That is something you can learn and your teacher should be able to help you do that.

I'm not sure if you were also looking for an idea of how much it should cost, but on our website you can find a list of what we charge. This could change depending on where you live or your teacher's experience level.

This should give you a pretty good indication of how your first few lessons/weeks will go. Keep an open mind and always make sure to let your teacher know how you're feeling about what you're doing. You'll be funkin it up with the best in no time.

Now get out there and start gettin your learn on!
