Let me recommend something I've used myself (in a situation similar to yours) that has worked extremely well and is super for self learning.

The Complete Ballet Bible Package is what I'm talking about: It's an all-in-one multimedia instruction guide with techniques, postures, exercises and more. Contrary to a simple book you flip and follow -- this package teaches you the essentials of ballet dance through audio / video demonstration and 1-on-1 video tutorials.

Created by a successful ballet teacher who struggled to fulfill her passion for dance at a young age, she has put up this package so that those who are keen to learn ballet don't give up for lack of a tutor or qualified instruction.

I respect such women and personally feel the need to acknowledge their contribution to this art form. The Ballet Bible is really a fantastic resource for both beginners and teachers alike. There's nothing like it in the market today.

I don't know where you are, but in England (I'm sure you can order them overseas) you can buy videos/ DVDs of the exam syllabus from the Royal Academy of Dance (www.radenterprises.co.uk). You could start by buying Pre-Primary/ Primary/ Grade 1 and work your way up. I think they're meant to help with if you are preparing for their exams, but they give lots of tips, and basically show all the exercises in real time for you to dance along with.
I can't promise you won't get faults without a tutor, but if you do this in conjunction with reading some books on technique, I reckon it would give you at least a structure to work by.
