Position:Home>Dancing> I need some tips on stating dance training at age 14?

Question:I did some dance classes when I was 4, 5, snd 6 years old but had to quit because of timing problems. Recently, I have joined a dance class at my highschool and found that I am...ok...at the technique...at least that's what I think. I am moving up to dance 2 next year and decided it would be good to take some outside of school dance classes because I want to improve and I enjoy dancing. Problem is, I'm 14 and I know that a lot of classes whichinclude girls my age are higher levels abouve me. I don't want to be in a little kid class, But I don't want it to be too hard. Think I'm wasting my time? Any tips from dancers with experience who have tips that might be able to help me?

i would start out looking for an intermediate/beginner class but if you can't find one then look for a really good ballet class. ballet is the foundation of all dance and if you're good it will make everything else sooo much easier. you cold also try a harder class for about a month or so and see how you feel in it. you can always ask your teacher/coach for help and if you really practice you could improve to their level. don't give up hope if you enjoy dancing! :D

Probably one of the hardest things is starting so late. If you are serious about dancing you could take a class that is your level or you can take private lessons.

go to the the dance studio you would dance at a get a list of all classes. Often the do have classes for teens who are beginners. Or they are called adult classes but alot of teens do them.
Also see if a friend will go with you. that way you wont be lonely and you can hangout with your friend.

ok no problem. i never took a class till i was 14 either and if you go to the right kind of school then they will put you in a aged ranking class. it may be a litle diffecult at first but im sure you can adjust. if anything i would recommend taking private classes. you know to catch up before or even during your classes.
i wish you all the best and good luck!!!

I danced my whole life but when i was 12 i wanted to start irish dancing... completely different than anything i had EVER done, I had no experience and all the beginners where like half my age. I started it anyways because i wanted to learn. Well i worked my butt off and eventully had moved up to classes with girls my age. You just need to suck up some little kids classes and it will be such a great feeling passing them by, plus it will DEF help you at school

some dance schools have beginner classes for different ages so you could try and find one.
or start of with the little kids and you will most like progress pretty quickly.
or take private coaching until you are up to the standard of your age group.

hey im right there with you im 12 tho and i plan on starting all the basics, i want to take balet, mdoern, lyrical, and tap (im scared to death i hear its very hard) and jazz (i took a year of it but went through it with a kiddie class ugh!) and hip-hop but im gana be int he highest hip hop class because i LOVE hip hop! anywyas the reason i like the studio im about to start at is it offers classes for teens who are just begging they call it "O" classes like O ballet or O modern...idk just look up studios in your area and ssee what kind of classes they offer...and if your dedicated enough to it you might just have to suffer through with the little kids maybe =] hope i helpedd
