Position:Home>Dancing> If dance ballet, how often do you stretch.?

Question:How often do you stretch outside of class I mean?
Do you do any other exercises to stay in shape for ballet, like running, pilates, yoga, lifting weights whatever?
Also I am looking to lose some weight before I start classes, I am thinking a goal weight of 150lb would be about right for my height 5'10", what do you think, I definitely need to lose some weight before I take classes as I have no stamina and am over 200lbs.

Well let me know.

well guys can weigh a little more because they dont need to do lifts.. i wouldnt wait too long before you join because it will be easier to get in shape once youre in the class lol thats what classes are for, to get you in shape and to teach you good technique ect. i would maybe run as much as you can, like a mile every day for a few weeks to try and get you in an alright cardio level though so that you dont die in class hahaha

um, for my outside training. i do about an hour of cardio on non class days and i stretch every day. probably at least a half an hour a day. its just a habit for me that when im just sitting i work on my extensions, flex and point my toes, or do plies and releves when im just standing lol only when im at my house. i also do weight lifting but theres not really a need because you do a lot of leg lifts and things in class.

youll be fine, i just suggest that you work on cardio and start healthy eating habits for like 2-3 weeks and join a class

i'm a girl, so i don't really know what it is like for a guy. I dance 5 times a week, so i don't really do much working out outside of class, except for gym class. Guys definitely need to be strong and have a lot of stamina! no girl wants to be dropped!
Good luck!
I hope you like ballet!

i stretch every single day..
i don't do any other exercises since ballet makes me stay in shape.. boys should though since they pick girls up and do a lot of jumps
i think your goal weight is fine.. don't be surprised when it goes up after a lot of ballet classes cause you are going to get muclesss

You need stamina definatley to be able to keep up with the dancing and you need strenght because no girl like being dropped! I am a girl and i stretch daily and go jogging everyday and I just watch what I eat. Just sart with weights and a jog and this should imrove stamina and strenght. Ballet is wonderful and I hope you dont give up on it beofe you have begun!

Hello
well if you starting ballet right now then you have to practice everyday. And if you have no stamina then ballet will help you totally because balletettes use their mostly the upper chest and their legs. And its ok if you wheigh over 200 lbs because when you start doing it then you will need to excersize and then that will help you get that weight off. Well you dont have to do running and stuff like that but i would 10000000% encourage you to do that because it will help a lot. Also when you feel tired dont sit down becuase that cann cause lung problems. Jus put your hands over your head and then walk around and pace yourself in breathing. That may help you loose some weight and only drink water when your practicing.

I stretch all the time outside of class. When I get up I stretch and just at random points during the day. I occasionaly do yoga or go for a run. I also do strengthening excersizes with a theraband.....To improve your stamina and lose weight at the same time I would suggest that you take up running or jogging.

i dont do much stretching outside of class because usually im not warn enough. i do most stretching during or after class when my muscles are more relaxed. ill do gentle stretching outside class at home but not loads. try gentle stretching while do something in-active such as reading a book or watching tv

i do contemporary and modern aswell and usually go out for a run for half an hour-1hr try building it up and listening to your mp3 2 keep you motivated. its good for building stamina.

honestly i think that ballet should be enough for staying in shape for it. i also used to do pilates- thats very good for building up core strength and stretching-something i would reccommend.

weight wise i dont know how much you would have to lose. im sure that just by looking at yourself you can tell whether or not your in shape. also if you building strength and muscle than your scales will say you heavier because Muscle is heavier than fat.

goodluck hope all goes well x

in some way i strech every day- whether it is a class(i go 4 times a week) walking around on demi-pointe or doing a simple class on my own( i dont do that very often tho)
build stamina by starting small and then building up on what you can do
it helps to take other dance classes( floor-barre jazz modern character)
in order to lose weight exercise well and use the exercise to build ur stamina
have a good diet but dont starve youself cuz than ur more likely to gain weight watch your calories (100 calorie packs are awesome) and try to stick to natural fats (nuts oils-olive oil and more)
get all the nutrients your body needs ( fiber especially) but try to get most of it through foods instead of vitamins (vitamins are good but foods like apples are even better)

I'll just go in order of your questions.
I usually stretch whenever I watch TV or am on the computer (right now), which means pretty much every day. You have to make sure you're warmed up before you stretch, though.

I do Pilates to help with strength for ballet as well as other exercises, and I know that guys do a LOT of weight training for ballet. I usually don't run unless I have to for PE because it hurts my knees. I walk and run turned out because that's how my muscles have been trained, and it actually takes muscular effort for me to run parallel.

I don't think you need to lose weight before starting classes because the classes will actually cause you to lose weight and gain stamina. It will be really hard at first, but the more you work on it, the less tires you'll get. Ballet is extremely difficult, and the better you get, the harder it gets because you realize just how much work you have to put into it and how far you stil have to go. Another challenge that only appeals to some people is that you're constantly working toward unattainable perfection, so no matter if you're the top dance with NYCB, you still have things to work on.

Good luck and have fun!
