Question:I really want to have a career in ballet when I get out of high school. I want to go to collage for it as well. I'm going into ninth grade next year (Fall 2008) and I take 2-3 two hour classes a week (that includes barre, center, and pointe). What are some things I can do during high school that will prepare me for a career in ballet. (My high school does not offer a course in ballet - I take it outside of school) I really love ballet and I know it's what I want to do.

well, being in a very similar situation as you, i will tell you what my teachers told me:

-add on more classes- (including lower, technique classes, it helps!)

-work extremly hard and if you get amazing enough(and i mean amazing) and you are applying to colleges, apply to juliard or another well known dancing school. From there you will get recomended.

-Nothing else...just work your *** off

-one last thing:
don't do what i did last night, it does not help the pointe work at all...haha
(i broke/jammed my toe and cant even walk let alone dance...i walked into a book shelf....im bright like that!)

:]

just take all the classes you can to be the best dancer you can be. it will also get you more experience for your college application to show your dedication. do as many shows as possible to get performing experience. it's too bad they don't offer classes at your school. find out if they have a dance team or something that will get you involved with the school while still dancing. you may also want to consider taking classes for things like jazz or lyrical in addition to ballet just to make you a more versatile dancer. best of luck with everything!

You should go check out some schools that focus on dance. Juliard is world-renowned, and there are many schools that are worth going to for ballet. There are a lot of private dance schools in the east coast, too. It's pretty hard to make a living as a dancer, but good luck to you! I'm sure you'll do great.

U can do many things . U can go to some of the High school's dances to get use to a lot of people . U can try out for the musicals. The musicals will give u some time to work on stage and dance. The dances may not be ballet but it will give u more experience. The music and acting will help u get use to trusting and working with people u don't know. U will need alto of different skills for college so take as many chances at different things as u can .

well as a very wise person told me (and other participants of Pulse) "a degree in dance doesn't really count for any thing except for maybe the dance life after performance like choreography or teaching." so a collage degree in dance does practically nothing but if you are truly into ballet here are some tips...
- take a french class. since ballet terminology is based on french this may help when you are trying to understand what the teachers are telling you. ( you can take this in school if offered)
- take as many technique classes as possible. Ballet is based on technique so these will help
- find some good ankle strangthening exerses so you can get of of the barre (for ex.use a band like those ones that some yoga places use, put the band on the ball of your foot and make sure it covers your toes then point through your toes and then flex. do this 25 times both feet. then, useing your other foot as support pull your foot out in a flare (your teacher should tell you wht that is) okay so do these things and well GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!

The reality is that very few ballet dancers don't go to college. College programs are simply not up to par in the ballet world, and you're better off auditioning for a pre-pro company. You need to be taking a lot more classes than you are now; at least 1-2 a day except for Sunday. You should audition for summer intensives next year (auditions are over this year) for schools like School of American Ballet, Ballet Chicago, Boston Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. These programs will require you to move to one of those cities for 4-5 weeks in the summer (they will provide housing) and take classes all day, almost every day. They are quite expensive and very challenging, but they give you the opportunity to maybe be accepted to the studio company. They only take 5-10 girls and boys a year, but that's the first step to becoming a professional dancer. If you do really well as a per-professional and get noticed during a performance, you could be asked to join either the company that's with the studio you're at or another company in the corps de ballet. You could then be promoted to soloist, then principal or even higher. You need to be not only good at your studio but amazing on a national level. Ballet is one of the most challenging things you can possibly pick as your career, but if you have discipine, talent, presence (the ability to get noticed in auditions and on stage), passion, and are just plain an amazing dancer, you can do it.
