Well, basically, they have a flexible wooden sole that supports your arch when you stand up on pointe. They have a hard block at the end, which is really made up of hard glue. Ribbons are worn with elastic, wrapping around the achilles tendon to support the ankles.

lol......I think when I got my first pair, I slept with them for about a week. Now that they've been with me for years, I absolutely despise them.....Too many bloody toes!

They have a big hard block in the toes so when you stand on your toes you are actually standing on the block

This is the best explanation I found. Hope it helps. :)

if u were a dancer u would understand...........

Pointe shoes are worn almost exclusively by female dancers. They have pink satin uppers, toe boxes made of paper and canvas stiffened with glue, and leather soles. Manufacturers include long lengths of ribbon for ties. You sew the ribbons on. Some dancers like the ties placed closer to their heel; others prefer them farther forward. Don't trim the ribbons before you sew them on. After you've tied your pointe shoes several times, you'll determine how much you need and can cut off the rest.
