What does "a fair amount" in modern dance mean? Even modern dancers take ballet classes several times a week. To be ready to audition for any kind of artistic dance company, you need to be a highly trained, advanced level dancer who is in classes at least 20 hours a week.

San Francisco is bursting with contemporary ballet and modern companies. The most famous of these is Alonzo King's LINES Ballet.

The San Francisco Chronicle put out an "A-Z" Dance Guide that, while two years old now, should provide you with tons of information:

the san francisco ballet is pretty prestigious, so i have heard. a girl in my highschool class danced for them and skipped class every afternoon to go dance for them. she was in all these performances and stuff, got paid. yeah.

Of course there is San Francisco Ballet, but if you haven't trained classically in years, there's little hope of getting into the school. You should check this page: http://www.sfballet.org/balletschool/sch...

I'm sure there are other companies in your area, so check your phonebook and make a few calls. Good luck!
