If you are paid for teaching or other such dancing activities, you can't compete as an amateur. Depending on the rules of the governing organization, you can regain amateur status after as little as 18 months after you stop getting paid.

Different countries have different ways they manage who is considered a pro and who is considered an amatuer.
Im my country (NZ) you are an amatuer until you complete your teaching qualifications, if you pass then you are able to teach and can no longer compete in amatuer, you must compete in pro.
