Question:I injured myself while doing a split... while i was so close to completely splitting. I thought i was pretty flexible by then but then i heard a crack in my hip joint. And now the area is pretty sore. Im taking precautions and letting the injury heal but will i become less or more flexible once the muscle heals?

Depends. If you heard a crack, then it wasn't your muscle. It was your joint. Chances are, it was nothing, but in worse cases, it can lead to inflammation, which can lead to arthritis, which limits movement. If it was muscle damage, that could lead to tight muscle/tendons, which will reduce mobility.

I dont come from a dance background, but took anatomy/physiology and musculoskeletal anatomy.

Chances are, its nothing. Everyone cracks their joints, and are fine. But let it rest, and when it stops hurting, then try it again. However, dont take painkillers (advil etc) then try to stretch it. You'll be unaware that your body is in pain and will do more damage then good.

It's best to relax and take it easy for a few weeks until it isnt sore anymore. It will take a while to get that flexability back and you will be sore at first. Dont give up though work through the pain and you will be back to splitting before you know it!!

once you've rested it and it doesnt hurt any more slowly start streching and doing splits again. just be very carefull that you dont hurt yourself again. dont worry as long as you dont over stretch and hurt a muscle or joint your going to be just as flexible as you were before (if not more flexible)
