Position:Home>Dancing> Right way to stretch?

Question:I'm trying to teach myself to do a split. I don't think I'm stretching right because it makes it feel like it's huting my bones instead of stretching my muscles. I don't know what I'm doing because I'm not a dancer. Could someone possibly tell me some good stretches?

whatever you do DO NOT BOUNCE! it stresses your muscles go as far as you can and hold it there, don't bounce in and out of it it's reeeeally bad for your muscles.
relax. breathe out and as you release your breathe let your weight pull u down into the stretch. like i said, relax....which means don't flex your muscles try to relax and just sit there. each stretch i would count to 8 slowly and release for 8 then count to 8 slowly again. probably 3 reps in each stretch. it all needs to be slow and methodical. it helps if you take a hot bath and sit for like 15-20 minutes at least and as soon as you get out stretch immediately because your muscles are all really relaxed and really warm. be gentle, don't rip anything push as far as you can comfortably then just a smidge farther in order to avoid pulling anything. good luck

Hi! Dance.net has great forums on everything related to dance that dancers answer. In the advice section, there's a whole section devoted to stretching, and tons of posts on excellent ways to stretch your body to achieve both side and middle splits! I DEFINITELY recommend it!! http://www.dance.net/stretching.html

well.
you could lay on you back and put your butt up against the wall and spread you legs like your doing a slip and then streach. we do that in cheerleading all the time.

Sit in a straddle position and lean to the left side then lean to the right side, hold each for 10 seconds. Then try and get your stomach on the floor while sitting in stradle position.

i like the website anotherplacelistings listed theres a how to do slpits sticky and i think they work

Make sure you warm up before you stretch. Stretching cold muscles could be the source of your pain.
