As for the rib cage, you slide the rib cage forward and it locks the abs, much like you do in isolations in warm-ups. If you are falling of balance on one turn, you are putting too much energy into the turn. Try this. See how little effort and momentum you can use to accomplish a turn. Then you will be able to find your balance.
Technically, you are "passing through" a releve while you turn. To do more turns you must pass more slowly through the releve stage, before stepping out of the turn.
Less is more.

When you are turning make sure you suck in your stomach. This will help you keep your balance and lock your rib cage. When you do this make sure you r still breathing so it is more of a flex your abs instead of a suck in your stomach.
When you prep make sure you put all you r weight on your front foot and also make sure that you are spotting and whipping your arms in. The faster you bring your arms in the faster you will go around. Also make sure when you turn you are on your toes and not flat on your feet. If you follow this then you should be a great turner in no time!!! : )

Try to relax, breathe and simply remember some key elements when turning. Remain high on the front of your foot, engage abdominals, spot, use your arms, keep your posture and most importantly keep your center of balance, otherwise the turn looks sloppy. Good luck.

Here is how to make your abs strong: I learned this from the School of American Ballet. Do 32 pushups, 16 crunches, 16 situps, 16 cross crunches, and 16 entrechats laying down with your legs 45 degrees and your upper body slightly forward towards the ceiling.

you are probably putting too much force into your turns.

like many others said you have to control your center, make sure you dont shrug your sholders, relax your body but at the same time stay controlled.

u said you can hold your balance but can not turn.

the best advice i can give u is to try and take it slow.
get in the preperation for the turn making sure you have your weight distibuted pretty evenly with the weight slightly forward. if u push too much from you back foot you will get off balance and fall forward. once you are in position slowly push your foot from the ground and lift and lengthen your body as much as possible. you will turn a full turn without any effort. once you get that feeling down you can give a little more push and you will go around many more times.

make sure to spot.
