Position:Home>Dancing> How do I listen to my college dance instructor better?

Question:Today I started dance classes at CPCC. I've never taken modern before, and I started out in the intermediate I course.

Immediately she singled me out and told me I don't listen well.

I need some advice on how I can follow her directions better, and catch onto the choreography easier.

That is great that you are taking your teacher's criticism constructively and want to make a change to become a better student/dancer. Kudos to you!

Your teacher probably means that you are not following her instructions when she is giving you pointers. You may need some one on one attention from her. After class, as her if you can have some of her time to nail down a couple of her moves. Tell her that you really value her instruction.

Then, when she is teaching, really watch what she is doing and focus on the details. Don't get frustrated because her intentions are to make you a better dancer. Once you understand her teaching style, you will catch on faster for future moves.

And of course - practice practice practice! :)

try taking time off every night to do your dances, so that you're ready for the next lesson, and you can catchup on the choreography. I know you are probably very busy, but a half hour a night could really help. as for listening in class, that is up to you. you just have to try, and it'll only work if you want it to.

hmm
sounds like this teacher is abit of a cow,
if i was you
i would use the anger & fustration that shes making you feel
& put it all into your dancing

if its just cause your not a good listener
then try listening extra carefully to your instructor
go over the steps in your mind as she's telling you them

& when you get home or what ever
just practise practise PRACTISE
thats the only way your gonna get better

prove that teacher wrong girl! :]
