Question:being able to do the splits is as simple as stretching. it took me a good amount of time to do the splits as well.

you need to stretch every day for about fifteen minutes. go into a split as far as you can go and hold the position as you count 15-30 mississippi's. as you count take deep breaths and relax to release the tension in your muscles.

if you are consistent with your stretching your split will be achieved.

Well I don't know if Im telling you something you already know seeing that you've been in dance for 4 years but a less painful way is to go down into the split position only on your knees and elbows. If you practice and can finally touch the ground then go back to the regular way and it will only be a few weeks till you'll be able to do the splits. It takes longer to do it this way and it also take comittment but its alot less painfull.
