First you should warm up before stretching.Try sitting down and stretching your legs in front of you. Then reach forward and touch your toes for about 20 - 30 seconds. Do this gently and slowly otherwise you may tear your muscles. This helps develope your thigh muscles which is important for both splits and backbends.

To improve flexibility for a backbend try lying facedown on the floor your body straight with your arms in front of you. Slowly raise your arms and upper body and your legs keeping your stomach on the ground. Keep it like that for 5-10 seconds then slowly lower them. You might also want to try leg raises. Sit on the ground with your legs stretched in front of you and your hands planted on the floor behind your back for support, make sure to keep your back straight. Then lift one leg a few inches keep it there for 10 seconds then slowly lower it. Try both legs.

Hope this helps. I don't know which level you are at but this should work anyway. It helped me alot :) Good Luck!

Research Yoga exercises.

start very softly, or you'll hurt yourself!
However it depends on how old are you. Why don't you try with the same you are going to do there? Ask your teacher!

make sure you are warmed up before you streach. Just jog in place for a while or streach right after class. you will feel alot more fliexible.

Make sure you stretch everyday or you'll lose flexibility. But i used to sit in a straddle while i was watching tv or soing my homeowrk. Then try holding a split for a whole commercial break. I used to do this and it really helped me. Good Luck!
