Position:Home>Dancing> I feel like I'm not good at ballet anymore?

Question:I dance 9 1/2 hours a week and just had 3 week break from it. (we stop classes after nutcracker and start back after new year). when i went to class this past thursday and friday I felt not as limber and as good as everyone else. one thursday the teacher payed attention to me alot and gave me lots of corrections (which i think is good which means she thinks i can do better and wants me to try) but on friday i had a different teacher and she gave me 2 mini corrections and gave this one girl who isnt even that good a ton.

i kno this is long but my point is, i just dont feel good at ballet anymore and think i should just stop. idk if it was just from the long 3 week break or maybe im just losing my strength and gift. do you think i should give it some time or just give up? please help me=[

Your body is used to a vigorous routine every week and you stopped cold turkey for 3 weeks. This was sufficient time for your body to wind down.
You know how hard you need to work to get into prime condition. Ballet is tougher than it looks!
I'd be focussing on whether you still love to dance rather than your abilities.
You didn't once practice in those 3 weeks?
You have a positive attitude toward your teacher's corrections which is great.
Perhaps the 2 teachers are thinking differently also. 1st teacher is concentrating on the student she believes will go far and the 2nd teacher thinks you have talent and will be ok so she focusses on the student she thinks isn't going to get anywhere and really needs help.

I speak from experience - ask yourself if this is what you want. If the love isn't there then you won't feel as though you're capable.

DONT GIVE UP. keep ballet up! just because of one little kink in your preformances, doesnt mean you should give up! .you could get scholerships in college when you get older. not very many people are good at ballet, so defineatly dont give up!

Face it. If you're not good at ballet, you're of absolutely no value to anyone on this earth ever.

i used to be a dancer. I found that you can have good days and bad days. Maybe you're having a couple bad days. I mean if you don't have to work at something there's no satisfaction in it. I'd stick to it. If you still have passion for dance then keep dancing.

It could have been partly the break. But it sounds more like you are loosing your desire. If you have the desire to succeed at something, you'll give it your all. If you don't, you won't. Only you can decide if you want to keep it up. Then again, maybe it's time for you to try something else that you want to learn how to do. There are other kinds of dance, you know. They can be fun, too....there's tap and jazz and ballroom, etc..... and there's something to be said for being diverse.

After a long break, your body gets out of shape FAST. You'll get back into it, just give it time. Even over the weekend your body will start to get out of shape. So you've got to try to make yourself stretch and work out a little over breaks.

Don't give up so easily! I studied abroad and came back after 7 months of not dancing. I felt horrible, but I can't quit now, it's my major in college. There's no way I'm giving up, I still love it even if sometimes I don't feel like I'm as good at it as I was. Your talent isn't going to go away, but your love for it can. So if you love it, you wouldn't give up that easily.

Also, when you get to a higher level of dancing, you start seeing things you were doing wrong and correcting yourself, and you start feeling like you're AWFUL and you somehow feel like you've gotten worse. But really, you haven't, you're actually a better dancer than you were, but you're realizing things you're doing wrong that you were always doing, but now you know more about ballet to know it. Does that make sense?

DON'T GIVE UP
i dance for my dead grampa

I went through the same exact thing. I think I once described it as dancing on a sine curve. I would feel like I was doing amazing one week, and then terrible the next. In terms of getting corrections, I would love getting them becaus it meant that the teachers were paying attention to me, but I always felt cheated when there was some oneThis summer I was at a dance camp were I was dancing 8 hours a day and I felt amazing. When I returned to my home studio, I felt like I couldn't do anything. I didn't give up, and stuck with it until November, when I finally found that I really just did not have the feel for it anymore.

I love dance still, but I feel like sometimes, it can get to be too much. You have to give it a bit in order to understand if it's simply a bad week or if you feel like your just not as happy as you used to be. If you aren't as happy, it's ok, it's not the end fo the world. I still love to watch ballet and dance around my living room when I randomly feel like it. I miss dancing everyday, but I don't regret it because I think it was the best thing to do. Once you know how you feel you should make your final decision.

In terms of getting corrections, I would love getting them because it meant that the teachers were paying attention to me, but I always felt cheated when there was some one who i felt was bad was getting a good job when I felt I had done better. You need to remember that everyone needs those corrections, and that everyone wants them.

I think that you just got rusty over the break, I know I did. Just give yourself some time to get back into the swing of things. Your body will get used to it again.

DON'T GIVE UP

I dance 15 hours a week and I too feel rusty, but I know that is just normal, give yourself some time.

Defiantly don't give up! I feel like that at cheering a lot! Example: I got my back handspring and I didn't do it again until about 4 days later. I started off doing horrible but slowly but surely I got it back. It's just the break. Trust me. You can't just LOOSE a gift like that lol!
