The Australian Ballet School conducts preliminary auditions each year for both Junior and Senior Programmes in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, and occasionally in other major Australian cities.

Students undertaking these preliminary auditions are given a physical examination and a classical ballet class. Successful applicants for Levels 1-4 and Interstate/International Junior Programme (IJP) are notified in the weeks following these local auditions.

Overseas students undertake an initial assessment by video and may be invited to attend the National Finals in Melbourne.
