First off have you ever cheered before? If this is your first time, don't worry about knowing how to tumble. You should go in to tryouts with an open mind and a "can do" attitude. 99% of cheerleading (and life) is all about attitude. If you can show your coaches that you really want to be on the squad through postive actions and a great willing to learn attitude, you have a much better chance of making the squad compaired to someone who may have cheered before, but is constantly whining or complaining about something.

They will most likely teach you what you will need in order to tryout. Typically it will be a cheer or cheers, jumps (toe touch, pikes, hurdles, herkies) , and perhaps a dance. Most squads I know of at the middle school do not stunt until the squad has been established due to safety concerns.

Tryout Tips for the Newbie Cheerleader

Are you a cheerleading newbie? Or maybe you've been cheering for a while and just need a refresher course in Tryouts 101? If you're nervous about tryouts, check out these ten terrific tips for tryouts!

The most important element of your appearance is your attitude. Smile genuinely -- the judges can spot a plastered-on smile a mile away. Relax, be yourself, and have fun out there. Be confident and carry yourself with poise. Also, be attentive to the judges requests and make eye contact as much as possible.

Make smart clothing choices. Find out if there is a requirement for attire and make sure you follow it. Wear clothes that fit. Baggy clothes look sloppy, and you don't want to be constantly adjusting for an outfit that is too tight. Also, you don't want your clothes to detract in any way from your skills. Wear your hair in a ponytail or any other neat way of pulling your hair away from your face. Tuck your shirt in no matter how much cooler it is to leave it untucked. Make sure to attach your tryout number to a visible spot on your outfit if not already assigned a spot.

Get your beauty sleep. The night before the tryouts, get a good night's sleep. You don't want to look exhausted!
During the tryout, take your time. Don't rush. Don't think about the whole tryout at once, take one element at a time. Don't worry about trying to remember the cheer while you are doing your toe-touch. Take deep breaths and remind yourself that you can do it!

If you mess up, keep going. Don't giggle, get frustrated or angry. Everyone makes mistakes, and how well you handle it will reflect on your ability to deal with setbacks.

Be loud, but don't scream. Enunciate each word loudly and clearly. Avoid who-hooing for your entrance, opt for a "Go Lions" instead...

During the clinic, try to make new friends, especially if you're new on the team. Work hard and take advantage of the expertise of others trying out or running the clinic. Be open to trying new things. The best cheerleaders are versatile; they can be a base, a top, or a spotter. You never know, the coach may be evaluating your attitude and how well you work with others. Pair up with someone to work with throughout tryout week. They will be able to critique on your motions and skills, they'll provide you with encouragement, and having a friend will make tryout day a little less scary!

Practice cheers/dances in front of a mirror when you get home to make sure your motion placement is correct. Clean up your jumps and tumbling skills. Point your toes, stick your landing. A sloppy toe-touch or back handspring is going to cost you points. If you're going to do it, do it well.

Different schools have different score sheets. Talk with the coach before tryouts. Find out how the score sheet is weighted. Some squads don't put a lot of importance on jumps or tumbling. Don't waste hours perfecting your herkie and forget about the cheer when the cheer is worth 30 more points than jumps.

Don't try anything you aren't comfortable doing. You can get hurt! If you're unsure of your ability to do a back handspring at tryouts, don't do it. Stick to what you are confident you do well. The judges are looking for confidence as well as ability.

They should have a mini clinic before tryouts where you will learn everything you need to do at tryouts.

the number one thing you have to good at a tryout is to cheer!

the one thing that you need to defintely learn how to do is a back-hand spring

PS- dont forget to smile alot!

well i got put into groups (3-4 girls per group) and we had to do side line cheers and the half time routine. Then l8ter after the coach called only the girls who made it and didnt call the girls who didnt make it.

Just go in there chilled and relaxed.

Be peppy and fun!Coachs love that!

btw i'm on my middle school cheer squad 2!

Good luck!!

you will have several day of clinics.

.you will learn the rountine you will have to perform at the try outs.

.at the clinic they will tell you if you need any stunts, flips etc. to be on the team.

.i have tried out 2 different ways.
in middle school..i auditioned with a group of 5 other girls at a time..
we faced the judges and did the routine together.
then we did our jumps and stunts seperately.

in high school...i faced the judges by myself...did the rountine alone..and stunts alone..

GOOD LUCK :)

It really depends on the team- the requirements are not the same for every team. But in middle school, we didn't have to do any of the flips. Having your back handspring was definitely a plus, but you could still make the team without it. We had to learn a cheer with choreography, and do it in front of the coaches in groups of 4 or 5. You'll work on jumps, like pikes and toe-touches. You'll might work on stunting, too. Tryouts will probably be several days... usually after the first day, they'll tell you all the requirements to make the team, then you work on them, then they see what you can do. Good luck.
