Position:Home>Dancing> I am 15 and want to take ballet?

Question:I am 15 and am very interested in ballet, but am worrying if it is too late an age, since I know that to be very good at it most people start at a very young age. I have a slim build, am athletic and have good flexibility. I also have dedication. How would you advise me to go with ballet lessons (frequency per week etc)? Thanks

It sounds like you are perfect for ballet! You are slim (many starve themselves to get your body), athletic (good), and flexible (extremely important in dance). Go to your local dance studio and talk to the owner, manager, or teachers-- whoever is in charge of enrollment. If there are multiple studios collect their pamphlets, talk to the owners/managers/ teachers and make pro con lists. The studio which you choose with probably advise you as to how many classes to take; however, I would say try taking 3 ballet technique classes, and a strengthening/ flexibility class (most studios offer this). Also purchase a theraband (www.discountdance.com) and work on strengthening your feet so that you will be able to go on pointe. You should practice stretching at home and make it a goal to get your left, right and middle splits. Get subscriptions to dance magazines (dance spirit, pointe, dance)-- immerse yourself in dance. Over the summer you can apply to Summer Dance Intensives where your will certainly improve rapidly. Best of luck!

if you have the interest that's the main thing =)

just find out about local classes.

as long as you enjoy it thats the main thing..

to find local ballet schools.

there are professional ballerinas that started at your age, but its a long shot. if you are serious about ballet, i would try to find a studio that offers classes in your age/level daily, or at least 4 times a week. dont expect to be a prima ballerina right away, and you wont be en pointe right away, but if you work hard and practice your butt off, you'll get there. good luck!

if you want to be professional..sorry its too late but for fun you sound perfect!

you are right girl you are to late, but it should not stop you dreaming, also you could train to appear in a chorus line as a dancer, good luck to you

you can start at anytime but just know that you might be with kids who are much younger than you... they're not gonna put you in a higher level with people your age because you are a beginner. also remember that you're not going to be put in pointe shoes. you'll have to wait years for that and you'll have to work very hard. so if dancing in pointe shoes was what appealed to you about dance, you might not want to get into it (unless you can handle the long wait). another thing is that a lot of really important skills like turn out is developed when you are younger. this will make ballet a lot harder for you if you don't already have a natural turn out. but if you really want to and think that you can do it... go for it and good luck

I don't think age should stop you. I'm 19 and am in my second year of ballet. It's quiet easy to pick up ballet at a older age. Find a school that has begginer classes in ballet and go from there. I guess you just need to find a school that is right for you.

i started when i was 17 so it's not too late for you :-)
