Learning modern dance is perfect for a 35 year old woman. It's tailor made for older students who have never danced and is an excellent way to work your way into a conditioning program.

As long as this is a beginners' class, there is no reason why you should feel foolish. If it is a combined level class (which many adult classes are) you should still not let yourself feel self-conscious around others who have more of a dance background. Believe me, they will remember when they were beginners and that everyone must pass through an awkward stage.

Since you are an older dancer who is just taking the class for your personal enjoyment, there is no reason why you should feel compelled to take ballet first. Even in a mixed ability class, the teacher should know that there are beginners present and will therefore review the basics that you need to know. This review may not be as slow and methodical as you may need, but don't worry about it. Just follow along as best you can and accept that you are a beginner.

Also accept that you are going to be much less flexible than the teacher and may never reach that level of flexibility, but that's OK. Look at the students who may know more about dance as being YOU in the future and be proud of each step you take as you get better and better. If you were to start going to the pool to swim laps or take tennis lessons, there would be people swimming faster or scoring better. But the nice thing about dance classes is that you are not just working on getting better at a physical activity, you are also creating something beautiful!

why not it'd be fun

Just remember not to push yourself to hard. I have never been a sports person myself I danced classical ballet for a year, in a teen/adult class. it was a blast!

Just remember why you are there, if you are there for your own enjoyment, then by all means do the thing!

This kind of activity is great for mental and phisical grace, Helps cordination (the reason I took dance)

The only reason Ieft was because I injured my calf and knee in a fitness bootcamp (I took to it to fast and too hard). Otherwise I would still be dancing.

You're 35 and still can't write correctly? Sorry, but bad grammar is one of my HUGE pet peeves...

I would say to try and find an adult modern class in your area. If you can't find one, try an adult ballet class, which are easier to find. You could definitely pick up some things and get in a bit better shape. I know people who started taking adult classes at my studio with no experience at all and look pretty good now. Go for it!

I reccomend that you do ballet first, after all it is the foundation of all dance. If you do ballet then modern, it's be a lot easier. Especially for a beginner, modern is a different less classical version of ballet. :)

i would try doing a ballet class first and then trying the modern class just so that you would have a base from ballet and then branch out to modern :-)

Hi with your question of course go and do the class. Modern dance is about expressing yourself so you can really do no wrong. Just make sure that if you take a class make sure it's a beginners class otherwise you might get lost. Just make sure you don't get intimidated and just enjoy yourself.

You're never to old to learn how to dance. My mum is 54 and has been doing ballet for 2 years. At first you might feel out of it and unable to dance but stick with it and practise and you'll get the hang of it really really quickly. DON'T GIVE UP.
