Few classes at the adult level, including beginners, require men to wear tights in class - only on stage. You can often wear a t-shirt and shorts. At the point when you know you're going to need them, then I agree that three sets is a safe number to have for backups.

In some settings (like Steps in Manhattan), even the women can get by with all sorts of dancewear, including tights with holes or no tights. Wait until you scope out the situation and/or consult with the teacher.

Danskins are just about the best you can buy as far as the unitards go, but I think Mirella has the best tights. If you are serious about this I would go for at least three sets. Good luck, there are not very men who seem to want the association with Ballet any more. I want to put my Grandson in because I think it will enhance his balance, co-ordination and social skills. There is also a great deal of self-discipline and self-confidence to be gained from this activity.

hmm. maybe bout 2 or 3. I have 2, but nothings happened to mine yet. and good luck with ballet. hope u stick with it because i know some guys can tease u for doing ballet, if that happens, tell them atleast you "Can" dance.

hehe, sorry for the exageration of my answer.

I keep three sets at all times 1 to wear and 2 backups. A small sewing kit in your dance bag is handy sometimes along with some small safety pins....I've even seen small rips/holes patched (temporarily) with duct tape - no kidding.
