Position:Home>Dancing> Is dance a purely visual medium?

Question:What's your take on this? Is dance purely visual, in that, can it only be enjoyed by those who can see? Can the blind appreciate it as well? If so, how?

n.b. I'm not trying offend anyone with this question, it's exactly that, just a question I'm asking because I'm curious.

Yes, by it's nature, performance dance is a visual medium. This is why the average person is less informed about the scope of performance dance because it's not as accessible as vocal and instrumental music that can be played on radios, ipods, etc. It also takes more time as a viewer to watch dance than to listen to music that can played in the background when you're doing something else. Dance also needs more space to create, produce and perform than vocal and instrumental music. All of which makes dance more expensive all around, both when it comes to creating it and to watching it. So it's no surprise when so many of the questions and answers (including those who answered you earlier) seem more ignorant about performance dance in comparison to recreational dancing.
It is also very kinetic and there are auditory elements as well.
I would agree that there is also an auditory element, as dance is usually done to music. Also, consider Tap Dancing. Without the accompanying sound, the genre would loose its distinction.
It is a visual medium if you don't participate.
It is a physical expression if you do.
And blind people can totally enjoy the pleasure of dance.
I'm sorry that I don't have any links, but a given a lead, a touch here and there, blind people can Cha Cha with the best,
if they have the talent to dance.
well for me, music is a deep, emotional and spiritual experience. when i listen to music and dance, my mind goes too a different place. its like elightenment, a high. and when my body moves, its a reaction to the sound, beat and rythm, that i am hearing. but this only happens for me, when the music is on blast, loud. and i cant miss a single sound from an instrument. even the vibration of the bass triggers such feelings. and the energy it gives off is amazing, imence , makes my body keep going to the beat.

anything with heavy beats takes me there. like dance, jungle , drum n bass, and trance..etc

so if blind people, listen to music im sure they can apprieciate it too. its better to be the one dancing rather than the one watching.

thats me!

hope that answers your very interesting question.

goodday.

:D

pls. i recommend you listen to 'Prodigy - Narayan' on balst and let your body just, go, react. you dont have to like it. everyones different. but its a freat stress release!

the act of dancing is also enjoyable, so blind people likely get their 'groove on'
