Question:

I am having troubles....?

Ok, so next Friday I am starting Contemporary dance lessons, for the first time. I haven't done any other dancing lessons in my life. I am so nervous that I am having trouble falling to sleep each night, because I wonder what the other people in the class will think of me, and if I will get in or not. Also, I cannot do the splits. I used to be able to do them, but now I can't. I was just wandering if it a neccassery thing, I need to learn to be able to do comtemporary dancing?
Also, what things can I do to make me stop think about the lesson in order to be able to get to sleep?
Any advice wil be very appreicable. Thanks.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: well your doing this for fun right ?? then dont worry just do your best and dont worry what other people will think of you splits are not necessary but you need to be able to do some flexable things erm of a night why dont you listen to some music or read a book or you can read a book whilst listening to music it'll help u drift off hope i helped x 1 way to get to sleep is to watch tv while lying down on ur bed. ull start yawning then get to sleep. for me watching tv b4 u sleep is a way to get some sleep if ur nervus about something. it gets ur mind off of it read a book when trying to fall asleep. it will tire you. if you are auditioning for a company or something, dont do it if its your first time taking dance. if its just a class, relax because i bet half the people in the class wont know what theyr doing either and as for the splits, you`ll learn how to do it over time if it`s necessary. just remember that there are probably other people like you out there ;) A lot of really good dancer's can't even do splits. It's really unnecessary, but I mean you have to be somewhat flexible.

Just remember that you are doing this dance class for fun, so don't stress so much about it. Don't worry what the other people think of you. Just do your best and be yourself and have fun =) First off, I would recommend taking other dance lessons along with contemporary - it is a very artistic dance style but also very complicated. You will need to know the basics of dance to understand and excel in contemporary. The splits are not required, but you will want to be able to do them eventually. Just remember that practice makes perfect, so try getting down into your splits every day. Soon you will get them.
