The Battle of Little Big Horn

Near the Little Big Horn river
A battle would soon take place,
With death, blood, bows and arrows
Surely no-one would lose face

General Custer marched his troops
Up and down the hills till nigh
They walked, marched, hiked and trudged
To where the Indians lie

Sitting Bull consulted the spirits
With the Sun dance performed with gore
He had a premonition
Of a victory all would awe

When the Indian camp was spotted
No warriors were in sight
General Custer thought it would be easy
He thought there would be no fight

The General had made an assumption
One that he would regret
For the warriors were sleeping
And the Americans would soon be met

The 7th cavalry was split in four
Some with every leader
With Custer, Reno, Benteen and Calhoun
The troops went off in order

Without knowledge of the position
Or the tribes population and size
Reno led the first attack
And was met with angry cries

A retreat was unavoidable
After many soldiers died
But that was not the end of blood shed
Because next Custer tried

He could not cross the river
The bank was soggy and wet
The horses were sinking and annoyed
And the Americans now were met

The Indians advanced on the soldiers
And the soldiers did the same
Guns were fired, arrows drawn
As the battle now became

Soon panic and fear took over
And it was clear they could not win
For the Indians were stronger
Than they have ever been

As men from both sides fell
The Indians still kept coming
For they were fighting for their lives
But the Americans were retreating

General Custer was brutally killed
With 5 arrows in his torso
He fell beside the American flag
That was the American??s deathblow

That battle had been lost
The Indians had won
The Americans were terrified
But the war had just begun
