Question:

Has the status of the artistt changed over the last few centuries?

Has there been a move to to the more prosaic role of artisan to the more esteemed role of solitary creative genius?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Yes the status of the artist has changed since Italian Renaissance.
Until then the artist was unknown and he was considered as an artisan (a social status not very well considered that period). He was financed by a king or a religion rapresentative, but the artist did not sign his creations.
After Italian Renaissance the role of the artist became more and more important. He was invited in several ceremonies and he signed his creations, therefore his role became more esteemed.
In our days the artist is organising his own art exhibitions.
