Question:

Beginning photography?

I am interested in photography and I have noticed that our local junior college offers some continuing education courses, but I wanted to know a little bit more before I get involved.

When I see photographers on tv they have a camera with a long lense and a set-up that looks expensive. I am assuming that like all hobbies you can end up spending a lot of money on equipment. I am currious to how much a good camera would cost.

Also, what about processing photos? Is it cheaper to process your own or have them processed? I would think with film and processing this could get expensive.

And what about digital photography? Can you get the same quality from a digital camera? I have a digital camera now and I really enjoy editing photos and adding special affects. I could just imagine what I could do with a wedding photo with frosted edges....editing is my favorite!

It would be a lot of fun to photograph events, but I also enjoy nature photos.

I would appriciate any advise! Thanks

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: In any photography the most important thing is behind the viewfinder - YOU!

Digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras can give results as good as similar film cameras. And digital photos are much cheaper than film because you don't have to pay for a photo unless you print it. Just before I switched to digital my film and developing budget, even using mail order, was hundreds of dollars a month.

If you love editing then by all means take some courses at the local college. Talk to a local wedding photographer and see if he/she will let you assist in a couple of weddings to get some good photos to edit.

Digital Photography Review has a Buying Guide which lets you select tons of things that are important to you and then gives you recommendations for the best cameras which meet your needs. A big advantage to this approach is that you can change a parameter such as price range and see how that changes the recommendations.

Matching a camera to your specific needs and desires is much better than just having someone recommend models that they like.
