Children's book. Girl steps back in time and meets a friend.?

All I can remember is that the story is about a young girl whom lives in modern times and down the bottom of her yard is an old ivy covered iron gate. She manages to open the gate and goes through. The gate leads to another house where another young similar aged girl lives. The only difference is that this other girl lives in a time several centuries before. I don't remember it being an Australian book. There was mention of a horse drawn carriage in the book with carriage lights. Sorry all! I know it's not much to go on but I thought it was worth a try.
