Question:

"glorious contest on the gory field" -- what is source for this quotation?

In late 1864, a Federal soldier used this in explaining why he would just as soon sit out the next attack.

I suspect Sir Walter Scott or Shakespeare but cannot find.

The soldier may have incorrectly quoted & I have tried different combinations, so far without success,

Does anyone recognize this "gory field" quotation?
