Question:

Historical Links between India and Ireland?

Someone in my family mentioned some time back that centuries ago people from India settled in southern Ireland, My fathers side of the family come from County Cork, and this they said is why our family are dark haired and have swarthy complections (particularly my dad and great aunt who do look Indian) I wondered if there is any truth in this, as I find it fascinating.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It's becoming increasingly accepted now that the Celts probably originated from Northern India, and spread out into Europe. You could have Roman blood in you - they were pretty dark haired and swarthy, and quite a few stayed behind when the legions ran away back to Rome?? Or more recently - Spanish. Part of the Spanish Armada wrecked off the coast of Ireland, and quite a few of the survivors settled there. We're all basically a hotch-potch of nearly everything - and sometimes long dormant genes from ancient ancestors can pop up totally unexpectedly. Happy hunting!
